About the Role

As a Service Operations Engineer, you will play a vital role in monitoring, supporting, and improving critical production infrastructure. You will support infrastructure build projects, identify and resolve faults, implement new technologies, and act as a key escalation point within the Service Operations team. You’ll work across secure, often air-gapped, environments using automation, monitoring, and diagnostic tools to ensure optimal service delivery and system resilience.

Typical activities include:

  • Monitoring production infrastructure and systems to detect and resolve faults or performance issues.
  • Troubleshooting network issues and supporting secure protocols such as IPsec, SSH, and SNMP.
  • Identifying and implementing automation opportunities using scripting, tools, or systems.
  • Creating and modifying logging, alerting, and triage processes with a security focus.
  • Responding to system alerts, security incidents, and infrastructure events.
  • Supporting infrastructure builds, deployments, and live patching activities.
  • Using Ansible and other automation tools to streamline deployments.
  • Providing physical hardware support, including disk/memory replacement and iDrac/iLO.
  • Acting as a technical escalation point for service-related issues.
  • Supporting infrastructure design and delivery as part of engineering project teams.
  • Creating, maintaining, and improving documentation and internal knowledge bases.
  • Assisting with urgent operational requests and participating in daily team stand-ups.
  • Maintaining accurate asset management and event tracking in the CMDB.

Skills & Experience

  • Linux operating systems and infrastructure technologies in on-prem or air-gapped environments
  • Experience with container platforms such as Docker
  • Good understanding of networking protocols: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, ISO model, NTP, TLS, OpenSSL
  • Scripting experience (Python, Bash or similar)
  • Familiarity with HTTP/S, SQL databases, and web services
  • Hands-on support of server hardware including iDrac/iLo and component replacement
  • Experience working in firewall-protected or gateway-based network environments
  • Understanding of ESXi and vCenter technologies
  • Knowledge of security tools such as Nessus or similar

    Desirable skills include:
  • Experience with Confluence and Jira
  • Mobile Device Management (MDM) platforms
  • Use of SIEM platforms such as Splunk
  • Backup and virtualisation tools such as VMWare, Veeam
  • Exposure to deployment automation tools such as Ansible, Git, CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with VoIP or SIP-based communications
  • Knowledge of IPSec VPNs and monitoring platforms such as checkMK
  • Understanding of cryptographic technologies

Qualifications and Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this position you must:

  • Hold a CCNA certification (CCNP preferred or equivalent experience), and;
  • Be a British Citizen, and;
  • Hold or be eligible to obtain NSV – DV clearance (For more information, visit gov.uk).

Please Note: This role involves participating in an on-call roster and occasional after-hours work to support business and client requirements. While flexible working hours are supported, you will complete your day to day work on-site.
